MTN XtraTime and XtraByte are services that allow you borrow airtime/data on credit when you run out of airtime/data and pay back on your next recharge. MTN XtraTime/ XtraByte are available to ONLY Prepaid customers that are eligible for the service.
How To Be Eligible XtraByte/ XtraTime services
To be eligible for XtraByte/ XtraTime services, you MUST:
- Be an MTN Prepaid customer
- Have registered your number.
- Have been on the MTN network for more than 3 months
- Have spent at least N200 monthly for 3 months
- Have between N0 and N75 in your main account
- Paid up any outstanding XtraByte/ XtraTime loan request
How To Borrow Airtime Via *606# Menu:
- Dial *606# and select XtraTime
- You can then select your preferred amount from the list
- After selecting your preferred amount, the system will then send you a message with the amount you are about to borrow and the applicable service fee for you to confirm the transaction.
- Once you confirm your transaction, the system will deduct the service fee, credit your XtraTime account with the remaining airtime balance and send you a successful notification message.
How To borrow Data via *606# Menu:
- Dial *606# and select XtraByte.
- The system will then display all the data bundles that you can borrow.
- You can then select your preferred data plan from the list.
- After selecting your preferred data plan, the system will then send you a message with the amount plus the applicable service fee for you to confirm the transaction.
- Once you confirm your transaction, the system will then credit your XtraByte account, debit your main account with bundle +service fee and then send you a successful notification message
How To Borrow Data via 606 IVR:
- Dial 606 and the system will play an announcement for you to select your preferred language, either English, Igbo, Hausa or Yoruba.
- Upon selecting your preferred language, you will be required to select either XtraTime or XtraByte.
- Once you select XtraByte, the system will then play out all the data amount that you can borrow.
- You can then select your preferred data plan from the list.
- After selecting your preferred data plan, the system will then send you a message with the amount plus the applicable service fee for you to confirm the transaction.
- Once you confirm your transaction, the system will then credit your XtraByte account, debit your main account with bundle +service fee and then send you a successful notification message

How To Check Your Eligibility Status
You can check if you are eligible for XtraTime/Xtrabyte service by;
Method 1. Dialling *606#, clicking on ‘My Account’ and selecting ‘1’ to ‘Check eligibility’.
Method 2. Sending SMS keyword: STATUS to 606
Dialling 606 then follow the voice prompt to confirm if you are eligible or not
These are the available airtime bands on XtraTime are:
- N25
- N50
- N100
- N200
- N400
- N500
- N750
- N1000
- N1500
- N2000
- N3000
- N5000
You will be charged a service fee of 15% on ALL lending bands EXCEPT the N25 lending band, which charges 20% service fee (Please refer to table below). The service charge will be deducted before the airtime loaned is credited into your XtraTime account.
- Example 1: If you request for N25, a service fee of N5 (20% of N25) will be deducted and you will be credited with N20 in your XtraTime account BUT your main account will be debited with N25, i.e. you main account will be in –N25. This implies that you are to pay back N25 on your next recharge.
- Example 2: If you request for N100, a service fee of N15 (15% of N100) will be deducted and you will be credited with N85 in your XtraTime account BUT your main account will be debited with N100, i.e. your main account.

XtraByte band – Validity
- 25MB – 24hrs
- 75MB – 24hrs
- 200MB – 2 days
- 350MB – 7 days
- 750MB – 14 days
- 5GB – 30 days
- 2GB – 30 days
- 5GB – 30 days
- 11GB – 30 days
You will be charged a service fee of 15% on any data bundle you borrow. The service charge will be applied on the data bundle loaned and your main account will be debited with bundle amount plus service fee.
For example, if you request for 25MB that ordinarily costs N50, you will be credited with the data value (25MB) BUT your main account will be in debit of -N57.5 i.e. N50 bundle fee + N7.5 service fee. This implies that you are to pay back N57.5 on your next recharge.
How To Check XtraTime/ XtraByte Account
You can check your XtraTime/ XtraByte account balance in the following ways;
- From the *606# menu, select ‘My Account’ then select ‘2’ to view your account balance.
- From 606 IVR menu: Simply dial 606, follow the voice prompt, press 5 and your account balance will be sent to you in an SMS.
- From SMS: Text Balance to 606
Important Notes
- Kindly note that there are 4 different languages on the 606 menu – Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo and English. You can select your preferred language and change it at any time. However, if you do not select a preferred language, you will be defaulted to English
- You will be able to borrow airtime or data multiple times within your credit limit. You can also borrow airtime and data at the same time but within your credit limit
- Your credit limit in a month can either increase or decrease but this is based on your recharge activities in the previous months.
- You can increase your XtraTime/XtraByte credit limit by increasing your spend from month to month
- You will be able to pay back any outstanding amount by recharging via physical recharge, logical recharge, DYA, On Demand, airtime received from a friend through Share N Sell or received airtime through any other means.
- You will be able to view your transaction history by dialling *606#, click on ‘My Account’ and select transaction history.
- The airtime borrowed can be used for all chargeable activities on the MTNN network, including but not limited to:
- Voice calls
- SMS
- MMS
- Prepaid Data Bundles
- Premium rated services
- MTN Backup
- MTN Caller Tunez
- MTN Play
- Other current and future VAS services
Note, the airtime borrowed does not have an expiry date/validity period.
But all data bundles have their own validity date. See table below:

The data borrowed will NOT renew after expiry
In cases where you recharge using a different recharge code, e.g. AWUF4U, the XtraByte credit borrowed will be deducted from the amount recharged then the balance or any associated bonus will be loaded into their respective dedicated accounts
When the recharge an amount less than the loaned amount, the amount recharged will be used to reduce the amount your borrowed but your main account will still be in negative of the remaining loan amount. But subsequent recharges will be used to recover whatever is outstanding until the loan is fully recovered.
