Supreme Court Nullifies Ihedioha’s election, declares Uzodinma Imo winner

0

The Supreme court, had Tuesday declared Senator Hope Uzodinma, candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, as duly elected governor of Imo State.

It, therefore, ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to withdraw the certificate of return from former Governor, Emeka Ihedioha and issue Uzodinma certificate of return as governor of the state.

Delivering the judgment, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun said the votes due to Uzodinma and APC from 318 polling units were wrongly excluded and should be added.

It would be recalled that Uzodinma had earlier affirmed in his appeal at the lower courts that the votes he scored at the 318 polling units were excluded to favour the former governor on the March 9, 2019 governorship elections.

It is on this basis that the supreme court upheld that Ihedioha was not validly elected by majority of the total votes cast in the said election, hence, Uzodinma was eventually declared as the duly elected governor of the state.

Meanwhile, the apex court has scheduled to deliver judgment on Sokoto Guber appeal against Governor Aminu Tambuwal of the state on Monday, March 20.
